Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Toronto, Ontario, Canada!
Named for the Huron Indian word meaning "meeting place," modern Toronto has truly become a meeting place of the world's cultures, with over eighty ethnic groups and one hundred languages calling the area home. Visitors to this most cosmopolitan of cities will find Toronto to be a mecca of diverse restaurants, shopping, nightlife and sporting and cultural events. The capital of Ontario, Toronto has a distinctly British ambiance in contrast with capitals further east, and like England, seems to accommodate many other cultures, languages and traditions, without losing its unique English Canadian character.
Native Americans, for example, can be seen frequently in full tribal dress conducting routine civic business in public buildings. You may also hear ethnic restaurateurs in Little Italy and Chinatown speaking in their native languages, but also readily able to navigate Canadian English with native fluency, which adds to the cosmopolitan feel of Toronto, as old country traditions are more preserved and celebrated than homogenized with the dominant culture. Toronto is Canada's equivalent of London or New York, and its theaters, neighborhood open air markets, cultural events and happenings are all well connected by one of the cleanest and best managed public transportation systems in the world.
